On 26 August 2022, Victoria agreed to raise the minimum energy efficiency standards for new homes from 6 to 7 stars, in line with the changes to the National Construction Code 2022.
Energy-efficient homes are more comfortable, cost less to heat and cool, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These changes introduced a Whole of Home energy use budget, covering fixed appliances like heating, cooling, hot water, and lighting, making homes more cost-effective, comfortable, and resilient to extreme weather.
Updated standards for new homes are mandatory in Victoria starting 1 May 2024.
Victoria will also remove barriers to installing efficient electric hot water systems, encouraging households to benefit from solar panels and supporting those opting for all-electric homes.
2. Select fixed appliances that are more energy-efficient to reduce the amount of energy needed to power your home.
1.Design and construct your home to achieve a minimum thermal performance rating of 7 stars, ensuring it requires less energy for heating and cooling. This includes roofing that considers the orientation to the sun and shading, ceiling insulation, wall insulation, floor insulation and window orientation and size during winter.
2. Select fixed appliances that are more energy-efficient to reduce the amount of energy needed to power your home.
3. Install rooftop solar panels to reduce your remaining energy consumption and stay within your overall energy budget.
The 7 Star Homes initiative collaborates with businesses and individuals throughout the building and construction supply chain to enhance the skills and capacity needed for delivering energy-efficient homes.
Sustainability Victoria is offering rebates to registered builders and land developers for designing and constructing homes with a 7-star NatHERS rating. They are also providing online training tools to help builders, designers, and assessors transition from 6-star to 7-star homes.
Rebates are available to help lower the initial cost of installing solar panels (PV), solar hot water systems, and solar batteries. Additional incentives, such as interest-free loans for solar panels (PV), are also offered for both existing homes and homes currently under construction.
Households with solar installations can save an average of $1,073 per year on electricity bills by producing and using their own energy.
Homes that install both solar panels and solar hot water systems or an energy-efficient heat pump can save up to $1,473 annually on electricity costs.
